The Eleven and Helen Sinclair are locked up on a planetoid that focuses on trying to rehabilitate the criminal class. The Doctor and Liv have arrived, but the planetoid is in chaos and a duo of criminals are in need of help. The Kandyman, a chaotic confection crafter made of powdered sugar, and his employer the Governor have a plan to rehabilitate the galaxy. But first Helen and the Eleven need to be… dealt with.

Ooooooh boy. The story here isn’t bad. Heck, it’s well written even… right up until the last about… ohhh… third. The last third is just bad. It ruins everything else that the story built up. The twist is so dumb and you will be so confused the first time you listen to this. Helen and the Eleven have a unique relationship, the Kandyman is deliciously insane, and no, you don’t need any knowledge of the Kandyman, but you should know about Doom Coalition. Also, the last line of this story is so dumb and useless that it reminds me of what people said about the last season of GoT, where someone doesn’t trust someone for no reason. Except here the writer is literally just saying it to build up tension when there’s no reason and the character isn’t right. This story has so much potential but it angers me greatly.

The acting is great. It’s stellar. The Kandyman is the standout, but a close second is the combination of Helen and the Eleven. Everyone suddenly gets worse in the last third though, because of course, everything breaks down in the last third. The Doctor and Liv are the best acted by the end, but that shouldn’t be something I need to say.

The effects are great. The voice effects are only bad in a few small scenarios, such as the computer, the coms, and for some reason, the crab guy sounds just weird to me. The action effects are great but then sometimes just disappear or get muted. The music is really good. I loved the score… but then the last third sucked. It was so quiet at times that I wanted to cry because it really is a good score.

I liked this story more on my second listen. I think it was the fact that I knew the big twist and so I was able to put things together better. Just because I liked it better this time around, doesn’t mean I would listen to it over and over again. Once or twice is good for me.

All in all, this story has so much potential. Everything in it is set up so well, but a single bad writing choice broke everything down and the last third drags down the first two as well. The acting was great and the effects were on point. Everything was great, not perfect, but great. This story just falls flat at the end. I’ve taken it from an 8 to a 7 because I need to be able to express how much I don’t like the last third of this.
