An Autist Reviews: The Broken Clock (Missy 1.3)

Welcome to Dick Zodiac’s: America’s Most Impossible Killers, This week’s episode is ‘The Very Long Night of Detective Joe Lynwood...’ but something’s wrong… Someone has hijacked the broadcast, and the re-enactors aren’t sure if they’re actors or the real deal, and everyone can hear the narration of Dick Zodiac… Maybe Joe Lynwood has some answers? After all, he’s in the studio to be interviewed, or… is he?

Wow. I love this. I just… this could only work on an audio format, otherwise, it would feel wrong. We’re watching a sensationalist TV show get interrupted by Missy as we witness her break the fourth wall and ruin the lives of those involved. From mysterious deaths to fakeouts, to a very interesting ending, this story is 10/10 all the way through. It has its less than ideal moments, but none overshadow the amazing stuff the story accomplishes and the awesome way it works. I. Love. This. So. Much. I don’t know what else to add. We get narration, interviews with Joe Lynwood, the lines are all authentically stupid and hilarious for the kind of show the ‘actors’ are on. Also, the way Dick Zodiac is used! GAH! I LOVE THIS! Just buy this dang box set. These middle stories are worth it, the rest are just bonuses! Best satire EVER!

The acting is great. Everyone is hamming it up! From Missy doing ‘flawless Mexican’ to Joe Lynwood’s actor / past self going full noir detective but with satirical lines! Missy, Joe, Joe, and Dick are all amazing! I love them completely and utterly! The side characters are a little less perfect with some decent delivery that could be far better, but they still are amazing most of the time. The panic of Roy the guard specifically is a highlight. Mark is also amazing! Basically, the acting is almost perfect aside from a few small lines, usually yelling and usually the side characters with the odd flawed line from Joe or Missy.

The music of this box set is honestly one of the best parts. The sad part is that, once again, the music is very muted throughout the beginning of the story, but that ends when it gets about halfway through and from there it’s 10/10! So, yeah, the music suites here are well worth it! The voice effects are few and far between, but they’re all great! Not much else to say there. The action effects are almost perfect, but the odd effect seems to be missing or quiet, but there are only like 4 examples of this and they’re really only near the end. Also… Wiggly Wee Thing™ is the best effect. Period. Try to change my mind. Hint: It goes wiggly wee. Really. The background effects are barely there, but for the few scenes they are there, they’re lovely. That’s that. The transition music/effects here are amazing, using a loud sting or record scratch to change scenes, but it can get annoying at times, which is probably the point since this is a satire, but still. Just generally grand effects here, mates!

As for the replay value… Just listen to it. You’ll love it, you’ll want to listen to it again just to put more of the story together. It’s no Colony of Strangers, but you’ll still want to listen again to understand it fully. I love this story and I would love to listen to it over and over again. It’s so funny and so complex and you just keep finding new little things in it, especially with Missy!

All in all, this review was sort of useless. Just listen to this. It’s amazing. It deserves its 10/10 and I didn’t even have to fudge the results. Just… have fun! It’s great! <3
