An Autist Reviews: The Red Lady (The Eighth Doctor Adventures: Doom Coalition 1.2)

London, the swinging 60s, Helen Sinclaire has just been turned down a promotion, her boss has just received a new collection of mysterious artifacts, and now two mad strangers have broken into her office and are spouting nonsense about ‘saving the galaxy!’ Something is killing people in London… something you can’t see… something beautiful and hideous… something you just need to take a look at.
This is a solid gold story. It’s a slow burn for about three-fourths of it and then it rapidly picks up pace and boy oh boy is it fun. The characters are all interesting, Helen is a wonderful new member of the TARDIS crew, and there are scares galore here. The writing is impeccable and all of the dialogue feels human and natural. There are a few small problems here and there, mainly with Helen just going along with the Doctor and Liv, but that’s easily excusable.
When I say the acting is nearly perfect, I mean it. There are less than a handful of less than great lines spoken here and there, but they really are few and far between. I can’t really add more to this as there isn’t really anything to say. The acting verges on perfection.
The effects in this are also solid platinum. The music is light, spooky incidental music with some stronger stings here and there. It’s not much but the music does its job superbly and builds the mood and fear factor of this story immensely. The actions in this are also very good. There are a few here and there that are less than ideal, but from footsteps to writing, the effects are glorious. The vocals are also good, except for a small part at the end which is meant to be hard to understand but is FAR too hard to hear.
As for replay value… listen to this one after finishing the last release of Doom Coalition… you’ll love it even more. I wouldn’t say it’s quite as dense with interesting hidden meanings and references as the Eleven, but it’s got a good few, and every listen is one of the most enjoyable things ever!
All in all, it's a near-perfect release. It has its problems, but they are few and far between. The acting is platinum, the story is great, the writing is grand, and it’s a VERY enjoyable ride. The effects are fun and do even more than just get the point across, and the music is very well done and fits the mood perfectly. This is a must-listen release for any fan of audio dramas… but now… I must take a dive… into the worst stories in all of Doom Coalition...
