An Autist Reviews: The Ratings War (Sixth Doctor Adventures Freebie)
*All Reviews Are Spoiler-Free Aside From Any Spoiler Sections*
As a popular reality TV competition comes to its end with an amazing live finale revealing the winner, either Todd or Lucy, a dangerous conspiracy is unfolding. The Doctor has seemingly come just to complain about reality TV, but perhaps he’s come for more reasons than just that. Beep the Meep is ready to take over the world… how? A children’s show of course.
This will be a quick review since this is a short, relatively unimportant story. So, we get a fun satirical setup where the Doctor can bash reality TV as much as he likes and where a cutesy creature is ready to take over the planet using mind control and his own TV show. It’s a well-paced story with lots of good humor in it, but some jokes fall flat or just feel a little repetitive, but most are great. We get some lovely and horrific singing, and we also get some really meta Doctor Who moments. It’s fun, but far from perfect.
The Doctor is perfect here, Colin is on point! Beep is also great, but near the end, he especially falters, that being said, his horrifying and sickly sweet monster of a cutesy ball of fur and death is utterly psychotic and you can feel the cruelty dripping from his tongue as he speaks. Now, the side characters are generally pretty sucky, aside from the one side character who steals every scene he’s in… the announcer for the live finale! He’s so good! Some of the best shout-acting ever. It’s really cool to be able to act over a nonexistent crowd. As for the other side characters, the girls suck, they’re high pitched and whiny, but the controller is really good, still! So, great acting generally.
Okay, let’s do a rapid-fire section! Good music but it doesn’t really heighten many scenes, the voices are generally good but I don’t like the Beep effect, the actions can range from great and detailed to utterly nonexistent, the background cheers are some of the best ever but they’re utterly overpowering and it really gets annoying, like seriously, also the transitions are just annoying and make my head feel weird aside from one halfway decent one, so yeah, that’s my effects rating, let’s move on, baby!
So, replay? It’s a good story, but I won’t be listening again soon. I just really don’t care to, but I enjoyed it again and I'm sure I will again in the future, but I have other better things to go over.
This is a free story, have a listen, it’s great at parts and bad at others, so just be ready for that.
