Planet X is dull, it’s boring, it’s regular. Everything exceptional or more than purely average is wiped out. The Doctor and Benny are exceptional. Unique. Something rather interesting is about to happen on Planet X, people are dying, Benny is on the run, and the Prime Minister is really trying to kill the Doctor.
This is one fun story. It’s creepy, eerie, and funny. There are loads of scary and tense moments, but they always get balanced out expertly by hilarious ones. The main story is simple, but it’s fun and it gives some good messages. Sadly, the story ends somewhat poorly and certain parts are sudden and unexplained. What happened to the Blank Squads, for instance? That’s a question that plagues my mind. This story does give both Benny and the Doctor some great character moments that really highlight who they are and how they work.
Boy, the acting feels abysmal. The side characters are not great. I can stand them, but that doesn’t mean I think they’re well-acted. Either the director or the actors dropped the ball, and I’m guessing it was the actors. The main characters are great, they give even more emotional performances than in the first story! The bad guys are also pretty good… except for a certain male bad guy who really doesn’t sound that great. The side characters were interesting, they manage to sound totally ambivalent, which is what they needed to, but the second they get emotional their acting breaks down.
The music in this is bland, and at times is nonsensical. Big moments full of energy are given slow, orchestral scores, and regular scenes get really cool fun synthy scores. It makes no sense. The vocal effects are stellar, they get the point across and they seem utterly realistic. The action effects are pretty great too, but when they need to be at their A-Game they falter and wind up being lazy and lame.
I loved relistening to this. I found little details and pieces of information scattered all throughout the story that enhanced it upon a second listening. I enjoyed it quite a bit the second time, and I'd be fine to listen to it a few more times.
All in all, a great story. The acting ruins a few bits of it, but the writing is generally solid and the plot itself is great. The Doctor and Benny get some really fun and emotional and serious scenes throughout the story, and there are quite a few twists and turns along the way. The music is absurd and makes utterly no sense, and the effects falter at times they shouldn’t but are otherwise pretty darn good. It has great replay value and many small details to find as you listen to it again. All in all, a stellar story.
