Okay. Forget a small description of the episode. I can’t describe it without giving away massive plot points and I want this to be spoiler-free. I don’t normally say that my reviews are spoiler-free, but dear god with THIS episode… I HAD too!
The pacing is the worst part of this, but it is still very good and the story itself is one that will have you holding your breath and upset that the story ends so soon. The twists don’t give hints until right before they are revealed, but if you are aware of Doctor Who's history and have started guessing, you will find yourself figuring out the twist just before it’s revealed and it is SO satisfying. The Judoon are fun and honestly kind of sad and sympathetic despite being murderous psychos. Also, a small negative would be that the side characters die pretty fast… like… there is ONE after the first half of the story. As things are revealed I hope you squee as much as I did… AND I DO NOT SQUEE EASILY.
The acting is the worst part of this, but that’s not saying much. It is still solid gold, but the side characters aren’t the best acting-wise… luckily they’re gone fast. The main cast is solid gold, heck, platinum. A certain man I love to death gives it his all, but does have some slightly hanky moments… but they are few and far between.
The effects this season are grand, but some are a little less than perfect. This is shown in some scenes, but the effects are largely good. Even the effects that look a little off still are interesting to look at and more than get the point across. Teleporting effects are Doctor Who’s worst effects, but this does it very well… just not perfectly… Also, the Judoon look superb and the voice for them is as good as ever! The costuming is perfect except for one character, but they still are hardly what you could call bad, just a little weird… even for Doctor Who. The music enhances scenes, but is rather forgettable… that or I was too invested in screaming my head off to be able to remember it… I don’t know, but I remember enough to say it’s very good even if I can’t remember a ton of it.
All in all, this episode cannot be described. IT CANNOT BE DESCRIBED. The things it does to continuity, the things it does to the story, the things that it will have dredged up from the depths of forgotten doctor who theories and ideas, the videos I can already see on the horizon on youtube thanks to this episode are all insane! The plot is gold, the writing is pretty dang good if I do say so myself, and the effects are golden. The acting may not be perfect, but anyone who doesn’t act extremely well is killed off or disappears pretty quickly. The costumes are insane, the sets are awesome, and I just cannot contain my excitement for the future of Doctor Who. Chibnall has had the worst run so far… he needs to figure out pacing… but dear god is this season looking to be VERY. GOOD.
THIS IS A MUST-WATCH EPISODE.
