Liv searches for something out of the ordinary in the 15th century, the Doctor is dealing with Thomas Cromwell, and Helen is going to a museum. But throughout history, different creatures and figures are haunting the crew of the TARDIS. A mysterious maker of clocks, a mad man ranting and raving about the end of the world, and clockwork robots made of metal and organic materials that are also searching for the pieces the Doctor and Liv are searching for. Luckily for Liv and the Doctor, a nun with a gun and a psychic wimple is bouncing back and forth in time and space trying to help.
This is a lovely, well, and slow-paced story. There aren’t many action scenes, just journeys, and interactions. The story is told in three different times with three different sets of characters, and the hopping between those different times is done very well. All of the characters are written very well, but many decisions and statements feel rough around the edges… that being said, the story is VERY enjoyable. If you like a slower-paced story that still moves quickly enough to keep you entertained, that lacks a ton of action, and that has lots of fun characters and interactions, this is for you!
The acting in this is impeccable. The Solvers, Clocksmith, and Cromwell are all played very well. The Doctor, Liv, Helen, and Sister Cantica all do very well, too. The worst acting comes from the side characters, but I think most of them are putting on accents and not talking as they usually do so that probably is why they aren’t on their A-game. The side characters are still very fun to listen to, though.
The effects are very well done too. For once though, my complaint here is that sometimes the effects go overboard… that being said they are also less than perfect at certain times too, but neither is too bad. The music in the past is fit for a king, and the music for Helen’s adventures is less than great. The voices are also very good; the Solvers sound awesome!
Will relistening to this bring you more joy than at first? Not particularly. But will you enjoy it? Yes. Will you find new details that make everything better? Sort of… but there certainly aren’t many. It’s a great story, but I won’t be listening to it constantly.
All in all, a great story with less than perfect writing. It’s only the first half of a two-part journey, but it works as its own story very well. Each section keeps you intrigued, you get some lovely conversations, and what little action there is is lovely. The mysteries are intriguing, the music only adds to that, and the voices and action effects are awesome. Every one of the main characters and villains sounds awesome, but the side characters aren’t perfect by any means, but they’re still entertaining to listen to. It’s got good enough replay value, but you won’t get much out of it. It's a fun beginning to the middle of this box set, and a lovely story. Have fun!
