An Autist Reviews: The Doomsday Chronometer (The Eighth Doctor Adventures: Doom Coalition 3.3)

Before Helen meets the Clocksmith, Sister Cantica pops up and takes her on a treasure hunt. Across time and Europe, the two hunt down the eighth piece, constantly hunted by the deadly ‘Revelation Sect.’ The Doctor, under threat of execution, meets an alien queen looking for her kidnapped people. Meanwhile, Liv is about to die and a madman out of time is getting very agitated and very confused.
The story doesn’t immediately pick up at the last story’s cliffhanger, instead, it sees Helen and Cantica going off on an adventure. The adventure with those two is entertaining and fun, and it plays on lots of cliches. The Doctor’s journey is rather fun, and it’s lovely to see him hunting down his friends as Cantica gets in the way on accident. Liv’s journey doesn’t really exist, she just joins in with Helen’s. The story and writing are exquisite, but there are some small problems here and there. The worst of these is that the only reason the chronometer in the title is even assembled is because no one can tell that it’s obviously a trap and a bad idea… which is really dumb. There is also a very fun twist at the end, but don’t worry, I won’t spoil it.
The acting is once again pretty good. The bad guys really get to shine, but the main characters don’t fare much worse than they do. The side characters are once more rather iffy and are doing accents they don’t know how to do, but they’re still fun to listen to as usual. Some lines are delivered, particularly by our main cast and Octavian, in ways that really take the steam out of them, but the majority are great.
The music of this release is solid gold. Each seems to have its own theme and it enhances the feel of each and every scene. The voices of the Solvers once again are perfection, and even near the end at a specific moment in which synth is involved, the voices hold up. The effects are nearly perfect. From regeneration to climbing up and down a ladder, to just walking, there are only a few moments where I would tone down or up the effects.
This story really does have good replay value. It’s fun to listen to, but it does sort of require the previous story as well. You don’t exactly get much more out of listening to this again than you do listening to it for the first time, but you will notice certain things. A specific twist or two have quite a lot of hard to notice hints strewn about throughout the story that you need to relisten in order to truly enjoy.
All in all, this’s a fun little story. It closes the hunt for the Doomsday Chronometer very well, introduces us to certain story threads that will be reaching into the next and final story of this box set, and it has a lot of fun parts to it. The acting is superb but does have its very noticeable flaws. The effects are superb, the music is lovely, and the voices are perfect. It might not have a load of replay value, but it’s great to listen to.
