An Autist Reviews: Carnival Of Angels (The Diary Of River Song 7.4)

A man has witnessed a brutal murder… but that’s not why Melody Malone and her charming kitty of an assistant are helping him. He has witnessed his own murder and now he wants to prevent it. New York City is the city of angels… and Coney Island holds a dark secret… so, would you like to visit Heaven or Hell?

I am so happy that Luke is back! And he’s back in an amazing story starring River and the Angels! This is a dark noir, complete with voice-over, a maze of mirrors, and people with special powers. The story is split between Luke looking into a special coin and encountering a hot American man and a crazy woman with an embarrassingly bad American accent, and River and the would-be victim investigating Coney Island. The story is beautiful and written well, but there are problems. There are few twists of any matter, but the ones there are are fun, and the writing is a massive step up from the last story that Luke was a part of.

The acting of this story is some of the best I’ve heard, except for a certain villainess… Her accent is terrible and it really brings down the story. Luckily, the rest of the acting is, as I said, superb.

The effects in this story are solid gold. The angel sound effects are lovely, and the electricity ones are also perfect. The worst effect, by far, is Luke’s half-transformed voice. It’s just a classic case of ‘throw some random effects on it and make it sound distorted and deep, that’ll work!’ As for the music, there isn’t much of note but it certainly ups the atmosphere. It’s classical noir music with some fun pieces here and there.

All in all, this is a solid gold story. It has a few glaring downsides but is very, very good outside of those few exceptions. The acting is superb, the effects are lovely, and the story itself is fun-filled and extremely enjoyable. I loved Luke, and I sincerely look forward to him and his alien lover joining River Song on another adventure in the future!
