After a plot to save some of the last humans left alive after the Great Cyber War goes terribly wrong, Yaz and Graham set off to Ko Sharmus with a group of rugged survivors. Meanwhile, the Doctor, Ryan, and a survivor who got left behind escape the Cybermen in a Cybership and head for Ko Sharmus to meet up with the other survivors. In the early 20th century, a baby is found in the center of a street and raised by a loving family… but something strange is afoot in his small town. The Lone Cyberman isn’t alone anymore, the Cyber Race will live on, and humanity… will fall…
OOH BOY, THIS WAS A DOOZY OF AN EPISODE! OKAY: Let’s try to keep this spoiler-free! This was fun, scary, and intriguing. Chris has delivered a lovely script here. The story itself is told in three parts, the Doctor’s, the Survivors’, and Brendan’s. I really can’t say much without spoiling things, but I will say this: I squeed at multiple times during this episode! There are some writing issues, and very few twists, but those that there are aren’t exactly foreshadowed by anything other than prior research and knowledge of the character ‘Fakout.’ Brendan is interesting, as we have yet to understand why we need to know him, and what exactly that final scene involving his father and a cop means. The survivors are well written, but some just disappear, and the main cast all get tons of fun and epic moments. The beginning probably should have been done differently, but it was okay, and the rest more than makes up for it.
The acting is awesome. The main characters all deliver some of their best performances yet, Jodie gets some really good dark doctor moments, and Graham is just a joy as per usual. The side characters, whenever they exist, are perfect as well. They are gloriously acted and they own every scene. The Lone Cyberman is also on point, although I think more impressive are the rest of the Cybermen and also… ‘Fakout’ is great for the little bit of time we get to see his glorious facade.
So, let’s start with this: I don’t remember any of the music except for during the Brendan storyline and I think one moment on the Cyber Carrier (??? forget what it’s called!). The vocal effects are, as you should expect from Doctor Who, are flawless in every way. The special effects are grand, the holograms, the ships, the Cyber Asteroid Belt, and the Cyber Scouts are all flawless! There are, however, some weird warpy effects at some points, and also the lens flares are annoying, and the laser beams sometimes look a little less than perfect. The action is close to flawless as well, with enough explosions to make Michael Bay happy and to still feel appropriate. There are some less than ideal action effects, such as the lasers and some other small ones here and there, but they are largely perfect. As for the costuming… it was perfect. The only reason I’m taking a point off… is that d*mn hat… that one dude’s godd*mn hat!
All in all, a nearly perfect episode, probably one of the best-paced yet, and also it’s filled with intrigue and scary scenes aplenty! The writing is fabulous and so is the story, although there
